What is Advanced Neuromodulation?

Advanced Neuromodulation is a class of cutting-edge therapies designed to specifically alter nerve activity by delivering targeted electrical or pharmaceutical agents to the nervous system. These treatments focus on reducing chronic pain by interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain. Crucially, neuromodulation procedures are both **reversible** and **non-destructive**, offering a powerful alternative when traditional treatments—including oral medications, physical therapy, and less-invasive surgeries—have failed.

Addressing Chronic Pain

  • For patients who have exhausted conservative pain relief options.
  • Targeting neuropathic and complex mixed pain syndromes.
  • Focusing on functionality and reduced reliance on systemic medication.

Our Comprehensive Spectrum of Solutions

Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

Broad spectrum solution for intractable neuropathic pain, involving an electrical field to mask pain signals. Requires an initial trial period.

Learn More →

Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG)

Highly specialized for localized pain, especially Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Offers superior stability against patient movement.

Learn More →

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)

Minimally invasive, targeted relief for pain originating from peripheral nerves in the extremities, occipital nerves, or post-amputation pain.

Targeted Drug Delivery (IDDS/TDD)

A non-electrical option delivering medication directly to the spinal fluid, minimizing systemic side effects. Ideal for cancer pain or spasticity.

5.1. Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

SCS is an established system where mild electrical impulses are delivered to the epidural space, effectively replacing or masking chronic neuropathic pain sensations.

Key Indications & Mechanism
    • Mechanism: Electrical impulses near the spinal cord interrupt pain signals.
    • Indications: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), chronic intractable pain, certain CNS pain.
    • Key Benefit: Patient Control via external programmer to adjust pulse parameters.
    • Process: Mandatory initial temporary trial period before permanent implantation.

Essential Risk & Safety Disclosure

As with any implantation, risks include infection (most common 2-8 weeks post-op), bleeding, and undesirable stimulation changes. A critical risk is **device migration** (electrode movement), which may require follow-up surgery. High outputs can cause unpleasant sensations or involuntary motor disturbances, requiring immediate deactivation.

5.2. Dorsal Root Ganglion (DRG) Stimulation

DRG stimulation offers precision targeting for highly localized, debilitating neuropathic pain conditions, such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Type II.

Precision Advantage
    • Mechanism: Leads placed near the dorsal root ganglion, which is stabilized by bone.
    • USP: This anatomical stability ensures precise targeting and consistent relief, unlike standard SCS leads which can shift with movement.
    • Primary Use: Uniquely effective for localized pain and complex conditions like CRPS

Specialization & Stability

The targeted placement minimizes lead migration risk, allowing the system to maintain effective pain block even when the patient moves, bends, or changes position, reinforcing the Specialized and Excellence brand values.

5.3. Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)

PNS targets nerves outside the central nervous system. It is a highly minimally invasive, safe, and often same-day procedure, supported by Level 1 evidence for efficacy.

Minimally Invasive Indications
    • Indications: Chronic back pain, chronic neuropathic pain of the extremities, occipital nerve-related headaches, and post-amputation pain.
    • Added Benefit: Evidence supports its use in reducing postoperative pain and subsequent opioid reliance in surgical settings.
    • Candidacy: For patients whose pain originates from peripheral neuropathy and wish to avoid major surgery.

5.4. Intrathecal Drug Delivery (IDDS/TDD)

IDDS is a non-electrical option that delivers medication directly into the cerebrospinal fluid (intrathecally), ensuring high local concentrations with minimal systemic absorption.

Primary Applications
    • Cancer Pain: For intractable pain refractory to conventional management due to intolerable systemic side effects.
    • Spasticity: Commonly used to deliver Baclofen to manage severe spasticity (e.g., SCI, MS, cerebral palsy).
    • Core Benefit: Drastically reduced systemic drug adverse effects and lower required drug dosage.

Specialization & Stability

The targeted placement minimizes lead migration risk, allowing the system to maintain effective pain block even when the patient moves, bends, or changes position, reinforcing the Specialized and Excellence brand values.
